The difference between Direct and Indirect pressure

Over the year of instructing and teaching, I have found that many people get confused about the difference between Direct and Indirect pressure. To clarify and simplify these two different kinds of pressure, I filmed this video.

In this video, I talk about the difference between Direct and Indirect pressure. I explain how to use these different types of pressure to reduce your horse’s confusion and enhance your communication with your horse in the training process.

I hope this will help you! Please let me know what you think about it by leaving a comment below.

  • Good distinction between the two pressures. You can see the benefits of being clear and consistent with methods of indirect pressure (‘kissy’ noises as my girls called them and hand gestures). I’ll leave trying the tail pulling technique with Lulu for say…..another five years.

    • Actually teaching a horse to back by the tail can be fairly easy when you have the right approach : ) of course you use the rope to reinforce it first until the horse can do it without. Might be another video blog down the track ; )
